First ice harvest in 50 years is underway in Detroit Lakes

The Detroit Lakes Ice Harvest Committee has been preparing for the upcoming Ice Palace Project and will begin harvesting ice on Thursday, January 11th. They have hired a crew of professionals from Wee Cut Ice out of Spicer, Minnesota to take on the goal of harvesting 1,500 - 1,600 blocks of ice for the project.

Hans Gilsdorf is the artist designing the structure. He expects the build to take three weeks and invites you to come and watch the construction process.

The grand lighting ceremony is set for Thursday, February 9th and will coincide with the Detroit Lakes Polar Fest Celebrations.
