Teams needed for Amazing Chase
Seven more teams are needed to make the seventh annual Amazing Chase a success.
The event, scheduled for June 16 in Park Rapids, raises about 15 percent of the Kinship mentoring program's annual budget. Three teams have signed up so far, but a total of 10 are needed.
Similar to the nationally televised "Amazing Race," the Amazing Chase promotes having a fun adventure with family and friends while building teamwork through solving physical and mental challenges. Teams are made up of four to six people and can include children as young as first grade.
Fundraising events like this are crucial to Kinship, according to executive director Rosy Hjermstad.
"It's important to get teams signed up because we depend on this event," she said. "This is our biggest fundraiser."
Hjermstad said Kinship relies on fundraisers throughout the year for 35 to 40 percent of its total budget.
She said the Amazing Chase is designed to be fun. "It's an adventure going around town and finding out about the challenges," she said.
It is also a competitive event. The team with the best overall time will walk away with $500.
All teams will also be entered in the bonus drawings for two $100 prizes and one $300 prize. The first six teams to enter will receive one additional entry in the bonus drawing. Teams will also get one additional entry in the bonus drawing for every additional $50 donated and for every team recruited to join the Chase.
Additional prizes donated include tickets to a Christian music concert in Detroit Lakes and a gift certificate from the Challenge Course.
"This year, we will have kayaking or paddle boarding on Fishhook," Hjermstad said. "There will also be challenges in the community hosted by local businesses. We have 10 hosts and each will plan a different event challenge so it's a surprise."
Teams are only timed while completing the challenge, not when driving between locations.
The Amazing Chase involves a combination of physical and mental challenges. At least two contestants on each team must be 16 years or older. Teams will provide their own transportation and will received text message updates throughout the race.
A shotgun start to send the Amazing Chase teams on their adventures will be at 2 p.m. in Heartland Park on Saturday, June 16. A mandatory meeting for registered teams will be held at 1:30 p.m. to go over the rules.
Participants will receive a map listing 10 locations for various challenges. Most of the events are held indoors or under a tent at area businesses.
The final event challenge and awards presentation will be held at 4 p.m. Fruit, snacks and beverages will be available before and after the final challenge which is designed by the board.
Last year's challenge was a giant Jenga game, but this year's challenge will be a surprise.

Kinship needs mentors
Similar to the national "Big Brothers, Big Sisters," many of the Kinship children are from single-parent homes or living with grandparents. The program serves children ages 6-17 and recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.
Kinship's mission is to empower youth to make positive life choices through relationships with caring mentors.
Kinship has 13 youth waiting for mentors. Anyone who wants to make the difference in the life of a child is welcome to call the Kinship office for more information.
"We are looking for people who are compassionate, want to share experiences with children, and are willing to commit at least six hours monthly for at least a year," Hjermstad said.
