Downtown Fergus Falls Mystery Tour
June 15th @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Known for its quaint tree-lined streets, abundant churches and flocks of geese, Fergus Falls also has a dark side that has largely been ignored…until now.

Don’t miss what has become one of the summer’s most unique events, the Downtown Fergus Falls Mystery Tour, on Friday, June 15, 8pm. The tour begins in the lobby of the historic River Inn on Mill Street.

As the tour weaves through the downtown streets, people and events come to life such as the lecherous antics of a well known businessman or wild chases involving “crazed” State Hospital patients. The tour goes to the heart of issues that divided the city for decades. In addition, we have also uncovered stories that until now, have been swept under the rug. There is a reason the call letters for radio station KGDE were known around town as_____.

Due to the content of certain material, the Downtown Fergus Falls Mystery Tour may not be suitable for young children. Parental discretion is advised.

Cost for the tour is $6. No reservations required. For more information contact the Otter Tail County Historical Society at 218-736-6038.

Fireflies at Night
June 15th @ 10:00 pm - 11:00 pm

2018 -- Take a summer walk on the prairie to view the magical blinking lights of fireflies a.k.a. lightning bugs. Search for different colors, patterns, and behaviors. Examine a firefly and its lantern up close. Try your skill at attracting a firefly by imitating its flashing pattern. Find out why it seems there aren't as many fireflies as there used to be, and what people are doing to learn more about these flashy, mysterious insects.

We will meet and begin on the deck. After a brief introduction, we'll walk and explore the rest of the hour, ending with a brief wrap-up. The visitor center will be closed, but the restrooms will be available if needed at the start and end of the walk.

Both fireflies and mosquitoes live in damp places. Please bring your own mosquito repellent and apply it at the parking lot before you approach the visitor center (due to allergies that some people have to DEET and other ingredients). Better yet, wear long sleeves and long pants and skip the spray since it repels fireflies as well.

Other materials and flashlights with red acetate coverings will be provided for your use. (Please do not bring or use other artificial lights as they are more harmful to the vision of fireflies and people.)

Please dress for the weather. This is a rain or shine event. A rain coat/pants are recommended instead of umbrellas for safety reasons since we are travelling in the dark as a group. In the event of heavy rain, high winds, and/or lightning, we will meet inside for a presentation on fireflies (and hope the conditions improve in the meantime so we can go outside for a shortened period of time).

This event is free and open to the public. Please register by calling the PWLC visitor center at 218-998-4480. We will need to know how many adults and children you are bringing, the ages of your children, your phone number, and if you have any special needs that we need to be aware of to allow your fullest participation.

New Work by Wesley Fawcett Creigh and Friends
June 15th @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The Friendship Committee
New Work by Wesley Fawcett Creigh and Friends
June 15 - July 14, 2018
Opening Reception June 15 4pm to 7pm
Free admission for the opening reception.
Regular admission applies for the duration of the exhibit.

The work in this exhibit spans the 6-weeks of Wesley Fawcett Creigh’s Hinge Arts Residency with Springboard for the Arts from January to February of this year. The array of personal and collaborative artwork that will be on display examines the concept of home, how we think about it, and how we visualize it. During her time in Otter Tail County this winter she focused specifically on the communities of Fergus Falls and Pelican Rapids, conducting interviews among the local residents in each town, attempting to represent a diverse cross-section. She conducted workshops and collaborative projects with the members of A Place to Belong (Fergus Falls) and Pelican Rapids High School students that more deeply explored these concepts and the visual symbols we associate with the ideas of ‘place’, ‘identity’, and ‘belonging’.

This multi-media exhibit will include video and audio works, as well as two or three dimensional works. It is meant to celebrate Fergus Falls and Pelican Rapids by highlighting the different voices of each community, illustrating that many unique parts make up a unique and complex whole.

Robert Kirkbride at the Museum
June 16th @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The Otter Tail County Historical Society is hosting "The Many Phantoms of the Kirkbride Hospitals" on Saturday, June 16 at 6 p.m. at the Museum in Fergus Falls.

This event features Christian VanAntwerpen, President of PreservationWorks and Dr. Robert Kirkbride, Dean of the Parsons School of Constructed Environments in New York City. Together they will address the challenges of preserving Kirkbride Hospitals for the Insane, including Fergus Falls, and the national significance of doing so.

How many ghosts can haunt a building at once? When the building at question is one of 34 remaining Kirkbride Hospitals for the Insane which share the burden of a troubled and tragic past, the answer is not simple. There are many ghosts of various sorts. Despite the noble intent of their creators and generosity of their designs, the asylums are easy targets for demolition. Across the United States there is a growing commitment to preserving Kirkbride Hospitals. In this talk, Robert Kirkbride will underscore the importance of decoupling the physical asylums from their phantoms to promote adaptive reuse. He will offer suggestions on how to resuscitate these remarkable structures which offer tangible lessons of architectural know-how, sustainability and embodied energy.

There is no charge for this program. For more information contact OTCHS at 218-736-6038.
