TOUR OF DOWNTOWN:NEW YORK MILLS
June 8th @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
To commemorate Otter Tail County's 150th Anniversary, the Otter Tail County Historical Society is sponsering a tour of historic Downtown New York Mills on Friday, June 8th 6pm.
When Otter Tail County commissioners held their first official meeting in September 1868, there was no New York Mills. Where the city is now was once a dense forest of white pine, red and white oak, tamarack and ash. This drew the attention of New York entrepreneurs Henry Van Aerman, Olcot Boardman and George Cornwall to form the New York Mills Company headquartered in Olean, New York. Arrangements were made to construct a lumber mill, the materials of which arrived in 1872 on the first rail car to the site. It was not until 1882 that the company had the property surrounding the mill platted and laid out into lots and block. The plat was recorded in 1883 with the name New York Mills.
By the early 20th century New York Mills became a destination for Finnish immigrants. Public saunas and a strong cooperative movement characterized Finnish influence on the community.
Come and explore the history and heritage of New York Mills. The tour begins at 6 p.m. in front of the Regional Cultural Center (24 Main Ave N). Cost is $5. For more information, contact the Otter Tail County Historical Society at 218-736-6038.

Cast iron pans are amazing. They’re sturdy, they’re versatile, and they have the potential to make some absurdly delicious dishes. However, many people are daunted by cast iron, and instead opt for cheaper non-stick aluminum cookware. The fact is, cast iron pans are very easy to use for frying, baking, and basically any other type of cooking. Let's learn how wonderful Finex cast iron cookware really is and watch our pro demo the great product.

June 9th @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
The Great American Think-Off is an exhibition of civil disagreement between powerful ideas that connect to your life at the gut level.
The Cultural Center, located in the rural farm and manufacturing town of New York Mills, sponsors this annual philosophy contest.
2018 marks the 26th annual Think-Off competition. The Great Debate takes place on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the New York Mills School Auditorium. A reception immediately follows at the Cultural Center (just a few blocks away at 24 Main Avenue North).
During the debate, the four finalists will argue their sides of this year's question: "Which plays a larger role in shaping ones life: success or failure?" with the answer being determined by audience vote. Come be a part of the 2018 Think-Off and determination of this year's "Greatest American Thinker"!
Tickets to the Think-Off are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, $5 for students, and can be purchased online by clicking here: http://thinkoff2018.brownpapertickets.com/. Contact us at the Center with any questions at 218-385-3339.
