All the Wild Hungers Hometown Launch!
January 12th @ 1 pm - 3 pm

wild.jpg

“My sister is pregnant with a Lemon this week, Week 14, and this is amusing. My mother's uterine tumor, the size of a cabbage, is Week 30, and this is terrifying.”

When her mother is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Karen Babine―a cook, collector of thrifted vintage cast iron, and fiercely devoted daughter, sister, and aunt―can’t help but wonder: feed a fever, starve a cold, but what do we do for cancer? And so she commits herself to preparing her mother anything she will eat, a vegetarian diving headfirst into the unfamiliar world of bone broth and pot roast.

In these essays, Babine ponders the intimate connections between food, family, and illness. What draws us toward food metaphors to describe disease? What is the power of language, of naming, in a medical culture where patients are too often made invisible? How do we seek meaning where none is to be found―and can we create it from scratch? And how, Babine asks as she bakes cookies with her small niece and nephew, does a family create its own food culture across generations?

Generous and bittersweet, All the Wild Hungers is an affecting chronicle of one family’s experience of illness and of a writer's culinary attempt to make sense of the inexplicable.

Amy Thielen calls ALL THE WILD HUNGERS "“A lush gem of a book, both heartbreaking and heart-making. Karen Babine’s language is the plush dough she kneads, her observations as elastic as gluten bubbles. By the book’s conclusion you will become a child again, standing on a chair to peer into the pot, not wanting the process of making―of cooking, of understanding, of as she says, ‘consuming the knowing’―to ever end.”

Karen Babine will be reading and signing her new book at Beagle and Wolf in Park Rapids on Saturday, January 12 at 1:00 pm--we hope you can join us!

Portage Brewing Company Event
January 11th @ 5 pm - 9 pm

portage.jpg

Friends of Portage Brewing Company in Walker are putting together an event to support and encourage the owners and staff of the establishment that was destroyed by fire
early Sunday morning.

The event will be held on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Leech Lake Event Center, located at Bluewater Lodge south of Walker on Hwy 371.

Corey Medina and Brothers will provide entertainment, with Jeff Menten, Paul Nye & Keith Thunem opening for Medina. In addition to donating use of the event center space, Chase on the Lake Resort is providing their Signature
Bourbon Bacon Popcorn & Trail mix. A Cash Bar will also be available with a portion of the proceeds going to Portage Brewing Company.

It is important to note that this event is not a benefit to raise funds, but an opportunity for the greater Leech Lake Community to express their support and encouragement for what Portage Brewing Company and staff have brought
to the community over the last two years.

All the entities involved are donating their time and talents at no cost. For more information, contact either the Chase on the Lake (888-242-7306) or Paul Nye (218-507-0081).

Yoga Benefit + Silent Auction for Portage Brewing Co.
January 13th @ 5 pm - 8 pm

A lot of people want to know how to help, me included. Portage Brewing Company suffered greatly from a fire Sunday morning. Thankfully no one was in the building at the time, however the structure is completely ruined. More than just a building and outstanding beer, this space provided a special community gathering spot for conversation, families, friends, events, music, art, crafts, and yoga.

This little event started as an opportunity for people to come together in support of an important and special place we want to see return. Yoga means "union", and gathering after a loss to the community feels fitting.

I can only imagine how devastating and difficult it must be for these amazing small business owners to see their hard work and passion get demolished. They have a long and difficult road ahead to rebuild.

Come as you are, donate if you wish. Any/all proceeds will go to Portage Brewing Company. I have no doubt that this community-minded small business will pay-it-forward once they're back on their feet. While the loss of Portage is covered under insurance, the loss to the community remains great. Many community members have expressed wanting to help. The owners of Portage are so very grateful for all forms of support. In the yoga world, we call this type of gesture karma yoga: essentially, "what goes around, comes around".

Also, gathering after loss is important - don’t you think? No obligation to donate, just come as you are and gather together.

I'm Bryana Cook and I teach yoga classes at Portage nearly every weekend through my business Northern Namaste Yoga. We were scheduled to have a yoga class this Sunday at Portage Brewing Company. In light of the situation, I asked them if I could host a donation-based class to bring the yoga community together (beginners welcome!). Community members have stepped forward wishing to organize a silent auction as well. Steve Reiter and Lynn Mineer will donate live music, myself and local yoga teacher Pam Veilleux will co-teach the donated yoga class, Chase on the Lake Resort will donate their ballroom for the event, and silent auction items are being accepted. (more info below)

Dawn Hallfrisch Mahon has graciously offered to step forward and head up the silent auction portion. Many area businesses have expressed wanting to contribute.

We are happy to have additional volunteers help set-up Sunday afternoon. Please contact me if you'd like help set-up Sunday at 3:30pm.

Opening reception for "Madwewe - It Is Heard"
January 11th @ 5 pm - 7 pm

Watermark Art Center announces the opening reception of "Madwewe – It Is Heard" in the Miikanan Gallery on January 11 from 5-7 p.m. Artists Kent Estey, Rod Northbird, Angela Two Stars and Xilam Balam Ybarra will be featured in this multi-media exhibit.

Madwewe reflects on how we make ourselves heard. There are so many ways to hear culture – through songs, words, sounds and more. From instruments to images, this exhibit will share stories that reassure us of the rich and beautiful diversity in the Indigenous world.

The reception will include opening songs by Rod Northbird. Angela Two Stars will conduct a performance art piece beginning at 5:30. Her performance engages the audience through one on one discussion regarding audience members' language knowledge, or lack of, and what factors contributed to that knowledge or language loss. The stories collected will then be added to the installation piece "Immersion" included in the Madwewe exhibit.

In addition to the opening reception, other events will also take place in association with the exhibit. Learn more details at: https://watermarkartcenter.org/2018/12/18/madwewe-it-is-heard/

The exhibit will be at Watermark through March 30.
